2026 - Whanau offering -

Supporting your child to use LAMP to communicate, using the LAMP therapeutic approach (online course)

This new course will be just for parents, carers and other family members who are supporting a child to use the LAMP WFL app. It will be a step-by-step approach to help you with picking the right moments, encouraging joint engagement through fun activities, and responding to your child’s communication attempts so they keep growing their communication skills while having fun at the same time. Although this course will focus on the LAMP app, it will also be beneficial to all whānau supporting autistic children who use AAC apps.

Presented by Dr Sam Brydon

Presented by Dr Sam Brydon

Dates: To be confirmed, Feb /March/ April 2026

Times: 12:00 pm- 2:00 pm

4 online sessions of two hours spread across eight weeks

About this event:

It is intended that the workshop will be fully participatory, with group discussions, practice elements, small group work, and action plans to put new knowledge and skills into practice. Support will be provided via an online chat thread in between workshops so that participants can give feedback about how they have implemented their action plan, engage in peer support, and receive feedback / guidance from the presenter, Sam Brydon. Numbers will be capped at 25 per workshop, and workshops will not be recorded. You will need to have access to a quiet space and good internet to participate.

LAMP Words for Life is a motor planning-based communication app that allows children and adults who are non-speaking to communicate efficiently and with minimal effort. The LAMP therapeutic approach is a way of supporting autistic children to learn and use AAC and is particularly suited for use with this app. LAMP WFL will be demonstrated and demystified throughout the workshops, with plenty of opportunities for participants to practice and hone their skills at setting up, modelling, and using in a range of activities.

About the presenter:

Sam Brydon is a speech language therapist with 30 years of experience in the field of disability, including as a social worker. Sam originally trained and worked in England, before emigrating to Aotearoa in 2007. She has since worked for the Ministry of Education, Patricia Avenue Specialist School, and currently for The TalkLink Trust. She completed doctoral research at Massey University in the field of AAC in 2023. Sam first discovered LAMP when she was reading and researching for her PhD. She attended the first training in Aotearoa in 2019 and has since implemented and supported LAMP with many children and young people with diverse communication needs and has been excited to observe how successful this approach can be with children who have previously struggled to use AAC.
