About this event:
Are you looking to support learners with complex bodies to get the most out of the curriculum at school?
Is your caseload comprised of babies or young children who have developmental delays and struggle to move and play with traditional toys?
Perhaps your day program is looking for fresh ideas on engaging activities and skill development for the adults attending.
This workshop is the first of its kind in Aotearoa New Zealand: not only will we be getting hands-on experience with the latest technology and trialling practical ways to help people with complex bodies use it, we will be linking directly to the curriculum (Te Whāriki and the New Zealand Curriculum) and to therapy goals.
We will cover
- biomechanics and neurodevelopment;
- adapting for CVI and contractures;
- the nuts and bolts of switch selection, mounting, positioning, robustness and maintenance;
- curriculum adaptations and interactive games;
- how best to support whānau in integrating switch-adapted technology into their daily routines; and
- progressing learners through the Stepping Stones (as outlined by Linda Burkhart) of switch mastery.
Come prepared to get in-amongst technology - bring some or all of the pieces of equipment you already own or have access to - and expect to work through a range of practical activities involving setting switches up, trying different positions (including lying on the floor), utilising different apps and web programs, crafting circle time or learning activities using your new knowledge and confidence.
